Most single-owner businesses don't need to have an EIN. You will need one if you meet any one of these criteria:

IF your business is structered as a Partnership or Corporation

IF you have any W-2 employees (payroll)

IF you file tax returns for employment, excise, or alcohol/tobacco/firearms taxes

IF you withhold taxes on income paid to a nonresident alien (other than wages)

IF you operate as a tax-exempt organization, estate, or trust

Although you may not be required to have an EIN, it can still be beneficial to have one for any of these reasons:

It will keep your personal Social Security Number (SSN) separate from your business dealings by keeping your finances separate

It will make it easier to open a business bank account as many banks now require an EIN

Depending on your industry and location, an EIN may be required for various licenses and permits

An EIN can be used to establish business credit, separate from your personal credit
